Habs mid-season report card (A)

How ya like me now?
We’ve reached the mid-way point of the Habs 2012-13 shortened season and the time has come to give Michel Therrien and Marc Bergevin full marks for orchestrating a turnaround on an order of magnitude not seen in Montreal for decades.

My initial reservations about Therrien centered on his temper and past use of the media to embarrass players but so far, thanks in large part to the Habs avoiding prolonged losing streaks, Therrien has been very strategic with his temper and controlled in front of the cameras.

Is Therrien a changed man? So far, so good but true tests come under the greatest pressure and the Habs going 15-5-4 through Q2 removed a lot of that pressure, on everyone. That said, the only ones who could be disappointed with the Habs season so far are those who simply want to be.

2012-2013 Montreal Canadiens

Q1 ended with concern that despite an easy, home laden schedule, the Habs even strength scoring was on pace to be even worse than last year and that the fast start was almost entirely thanks to 5.5 power plays a night generating 41% of total offense. Knowing that power play opportunities in the NHL become fewer as the season progresses and that they’ve been trending down every year since 2005-06, time was short to get their game sorted. I called it “borrowed time” in grading the Habs “C” for Q1.

Power Play Differential

Two weeks into the season, teams across the NHL were averaging 4.36 power plays a night but it’s now down to 3.67 and continuing to fade. For the Canadiens, power plays dropped from 5.5 to 4.61 by the end of Q2 and will likely continue to trend down as well. Still, the pressure-based system implemented by Michel Therrien that’s based on a stronger forecheck should keep the Habs near the top of the league in power play opportunities.

Combined with improving discipline, the Canadiens have a surplus of power plays (PP-PK=22) for the first time in years, a foreign body to the past regime.  Reliance on the power play for total offense has dropped from 41% to 28.9%, still high but trending the right way. Cup contenders have a rate closer to 20 than 30 so there’s still work to do.

How impressive is the culture change in Montreal with the shift from a passive to aggressive system? In Therrien's first season the Habs have a +22 power play surplus and are on pace to approach +40 in a shortened season. The 1st year under Jacques Martin? An embarrassing -50.

League Rankings - Q2 vs. (Q1) Results

4 (10) – Goals scored per game (3.19), 10 (16) – Goals against per game (2.46), 3 (14) – 5v5 ratio (1.38), 9 (9) – Power play (20.0%), 14 (17) – Penalty kill (81.6%), 8 (13) – Shots per game (30.3), 4 (12) – Shots against per game (26.6), 23 (28) – Faceoffs (48.0%), 1 (3) – Most power play time (187:42), 13 (27) – Most penalty kill time (148:50), 26 (29) – Most penalties (140), 16 (20) – Blocked shots (374), 13 (11) – Most shots missed (298), 14 (12) – Hits (612), 17 (16) – Takeaways (160), 9 (7) – Most giveaways (209).

Even Strength Differential

What a difference over the last quarter. The Canadiens under Michel Therrien are now scoring 2.27 even strength goals a game, up from 1.88 last year and currently the highest it’s been in more than 14 years. Even strength goals against in Q2 rose from an unsustainable 1.30 to 1.73 but it’s still their lowest ES goals against rate in 9 years.

All in, the Habs ES scoring differential is +0.538 goals a game, a staggering improvement considering they’ve only been above the Mendoza line (+.200) just once the previous 14 years. With at least 75-78% of total offense coming without a man advantage in today’s NHL, these numbers cannot be more important as it is THE reason the Habs are where they are in the standings.

Fact is, even strength differential has improved far beyond the seasons of a healthy Andrei Markov, healthy rosters and previous roster turnovers. There has been a fundamental change in how the Montreal Canadiens strategically approach the game and that starts at the top. To suggest otherwise is to ignore the magnitude of change from almost 20 years of listless results that’s lowered expectations to a point where 6th to 8th place finishes are considering a success. The question now is, how long can it be maintained in a game of constant adjustments?

Thoughts

There’s been much debate over Therrien’s handling of the players, a rite of passage for all Habs head coaches, but it’s hard to argue with the results so far. Markov was playing well over 18 even strength minutes a game throughout Q1 but that was cut by almost 2 minutes through Q2 and rolled into the power play. Given Markov’s recent struggles, I consider the adjustment a positive sign. Desharnais wasn’t benched during his slow start but with Eller struggling at the same time, what alternative was there? Galchenyuk? Hardly.

The Galchenyuk experiment at center failed badly with his faceoff talents not quite ready for prime time to warrant bigger minutes against tougher matchups. Considering he was taking an average of 3 faceoffs a night in Sarnia after a season effectively lost to injury, it wasn’t much of a surprise. What was surprising was watching Brandon Prust taking Galchenyuk’s D zone faceoffs on icings. That’s situational awareness, pure and simple. Galchenyuk is doing okay on the wing but for now, he's clearly behind Gallagher's overall game and needs to keep his head up cutting through the middle of the ice to avoid big hits. More importantly, Galchenyuk has got to shoot more.

As for Subban, I felt his minutes and responsibilities would climb over time and by the end of Q2 only Markov was logging more ice time. For those who think it’s just a result of the concussion suffered by Raphael Diaz, the quality and production Subban generated with those minutes can’t be ignored by anyone, Therrien included. I suspect it’s now only a matter of time before fans see Subban back on the PK.

In terms of health, only the Islanders, Devils, Blues and Wild had fewer cap dollars sidelined due to injury during the first quarter of the season. They lost Bourque, Diaz, Gallagher (albeit briefly) to concussion and now Prust but they were still healthier than two thirds of the NHL. With minimal NHL-ready depth in Hamilton, the Habs will need to stay very healthy to remain in a strong playoff position.

Report Cards

In order to provide as much information as possible, I’ve broken the player stats into Home and Away segments per quarter so help identify areas of improvement or regression:
